Lab Values

We have a set of core values that we use to guide our interactions in our group. They help us to orientate ourselves, and guide our decisions and interactions with each other within the group as we go about our work.

Curious

Science is incredibly exciting, but only if you’re curious to find out something genuinely new. We encourage and support you to take risks and try exciting things; to think creatively and find inventive solutions and ideas to apply to your research: “let’s give it a go and see what we find!”

Sustainable

We strive to ensure that our research is sustainable. We care about both the reagents and resources that we use, but also the working environment and practices that we create. We support flexible working patterns to ensure our lab members maintain a well balanced life, and we aim to align our publications to the timelines and aspirations of lab members.

Brave

You will always come across techniques, approaches, experiments and ideas that you find challenging or are worried about trying. However, these are often the things that allow you to really uncover genuinely new and exciting things. We encourage and support you to be brave about trying the things you’re worries about: “What’s the worst that could happen?”

Generous

We are generous with our time, reagents, resources and knowledge. Sharing these is crucial to be able to work together efficiently as a team.

Pragmatic

Our time in lab is short, so we make sure we are able to work as efficiently as possible, through our decisions, the infrastructure and resources that we put in place and by working together collaboratively as a team.

Considerate

We work hard to treat others in our group as we would like to be treated ourselves, and to be kind in our interactions with each other. We recognise that the people we interact with, both inside and outside the group, are individuals with values and emotions that deserve equal respect and consideration. We are open and honest with each other about issues in lab, good or bad. Our communication is clear and our group is a safe space to raise problems, grievances or issues. This ensures that problems are dealt with quickly and conflicts resolved efficiently.

Respectful

We are respectful of each others’ knowledge and expertise. We are respectful of our own time, and of other people’s time, both within and outside of work. We respect our equipment, reagents and resources, and work hard to look after and appreciate the resources we have. We strive to ensure that there is no hierarchy on our group, and believe that everyone's opinion deserves to be heard: “There’s no such thing as a stupid question”.
